Abstract

In the North-Western Crimea, Bronze Age settlements and associated wall bases have been identified, which are the remains of large (up to 50 m long) oval and round limestone stone structures. The archaeological materials and ethnographic data gave the possibility to interpret such structures as “stone paddocks for cattle”. The application of the geochemical method for indication of the functional zones in the places of such objects supported that these objects had been used as paddocks for cattle (the Tarkhankut-18 settlement, field archaeological excavations of 2019–2020). This became the basis of the development of non-invasive investigations of cultural layers for mapping archaeological site boundaries on the vast square. The use of a piston sampler, XRF-WD analysis for determining the chemical composition of sediments and mapping geochemical indicators of anthropogenic activity made it possible to conduct pilot studies in the 2022 field season to identify the cultural layer and establish its boundaries at the Tyumen-7 settlement.
