Abstract

The article discusses the necessity of applying specific methodologies during excavation work at dune sites. It highlights the unique characteristics of such sites as a result of sedimentation and post-sedimentation processes, including indistinct stratigraphy, compression of cultural layers, and the dispersed distribution of artifacts within them. It is noted that in archaeological practice, the methodology of sampling by arbitrary horizons based on levels or horizontal cleaning is widely used during excavations. Using the example of the Chernoozerye II site, the article demonstrates the distortion of the planigraphic picture and the creation of “phantom” objects (structures of the cultural layer) when this method is applied. The results of excavations at the same site are presented, taking into account the use of the methodology of sampling by arbitrary horizons based on lithological layers.
