Abstract

The article introduces into scientific circulation materials obtained as a result of archaeological exploration and the subsequent excavations at the archaeological complex of the Kandymtobe sites, consisting of two medieval tortkuls and an ancient settlement. The complex is located on the northern slope of the Kuyuk Mountains of the Karatau Range (Asa River Valley). The purpose of exploration and excavation is to determine the chronology, topography and functional purpose of this complex of sites. Excavations on the site of Kandymtobe-2 revealed a whole premise on its capital wall from the outside. The outline of the outer walls of the tortkul and the outer room was determined. According to the results of research, it was revealed that the settlement belongs to the Kangju State era, and the tortkul belongs to the 9th–12th centuries. The building located in front of the Kuyuk Pass was the caravanserai was also revealed. During the excavations, a collection of ceramics was obtained, including tableware, kitchenware, and household items, which were used in construction. The ceramics from the settlement date to the 1st–4th centuries AD, while those from both tortkuls date to the 9th–12th centuries AD. Archaeozoological analysis indicates that all types of domestic animals were present in the studied settlements. Sheep and goats were slaughtered at different ages, and cattle were used for meat only as adults.
