In the article “Natural prerequisites for the localization of medieval tortkuls in the Talas valley”, the purpose of the work is to identify and study the main natural factors that influenced the localization of tortkuls in the vast expanse of the Talas River basin. The aridity of the climate predetermined the main aspects in choosing the location of these outposts. The key role was played by water bodies with a constant flow, freshwater, crossing settlements with developed infrastructure and agriculture. The water supply of the study area was greatly influenced by the geological and geomorphological conditions in different parts of the Talas Valley, which directly affected the placement of tortkuls. The features of the hydrogeological conditions of the region largely contributed to the better water supply and the prospects of the Talas Valley as the largest transit corridor for people and goods.
