Abstract

The article presents the results of a study of the physicochemical properties of degraded wood recovered from the excavation of Kurgan No. 11 (4th–3rd centuries BC) of the Berel burial ground in the Kazakh Altai, investigated by the international expedition of the Margulan Institute of Archaeology (led by Z. Samashev) in 1998–1999. Based on a comprehensive set of analyses, a technology for cleaning, conservation, and restoration of wooden artifacts was developed. The results of applying this technology for the preservation of both dry and waterlogged wood are presented, and the issue of wood preservation in soil conditions is also discussed.
